Level design - A concrete step-by-step method to plan a great player's experience

Objectives

The construction of a level design starts by the definition of what the gamer’s experience will be made of.

The object of this seminar is to describe in details the six golden rules of level design and to allow students to implement them in their own game project.

Content

The seminar will be made up of three different types of events:

 Lectures. Each golden rule of level design will be described in detail with the help of triple-A games analysis (FEAR, Far Cry, STALKER, God Of War, etc.). Guidelines for their proper implementation will be given as well.

Case studies. To practice the implementation of the golden rules, the students will be presented with case studies made up of games with problems. In small groups, they will have to analyze them and offer solutions that will be shared with the rest of the class.

Development of a level design blueprint. In small groups, students will be asked to implement what they have learnt in their own game project. They will develop a level design blueprint, the document that defines how the level design builds the gamer’s experience.
