Gameplay Panorama of a Given Genre

 

The purpose of the Gameplay Panorama is to analyze gameplay mechanisms used in reference titles for studios or publishers designing games in a genre with which they are not familiar.

It addresses the following questions:

  • What is the essence of a given genre ?

  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the various gameplay mechanisms (interface, camera management, etc.) used in the genre ?

  • How can a new concept be differentiated from existing titles while maintaining the players’ expectations for a given genre ?

  • How big should the levels be ?

  • Which of the following strategies should be followed in order to manage the key parameters for the level design: Difficulty, pace and the renewal of the player’s experience ?
