Defining
the right concept for a licence
Brainstorming is the most
commonly used technique in choosing a game concept best suited for a
particular licence.
While this approach certainly produces a vast amount
of ideas in a short time, it does have shortcomings. Almost all meetings
held by a publisher involve exclusively people from inside the video
games industry. Those individuals tend to focus on games they already
know. The danger is that only "me-too" concepts mimicking existing
titles will be brought up.
The Game Design Studio
has developed a method that rationalizes the process of searching for a
high concept to license. It features the following advantages:
-
The thinking process
is broken down into parts, making the approach more "transparent"
for decision-makers
-
Experts from outside
the industry can step in and contribute without having to know the
'nuts and bolts' of game design
-
Participants are
encouraged to ask the right questions.
